Events Programme

The 3 major events which we host annually are the Haris Tournament, the Sureshot Boy's National Cup Finals and Senior Men's and Women's Final Four Championships. Our partnership with Manchester City Council extends to 2012 in hosting these 3 events. We continue to be grateful for the support of Manchester City Council and England Basketball for our programme at ABC.

Haris Tournament

Haris

The Haris Memorial Tournament is an annual holiday event which pays tribute to Haris Charalambous, one of the top players to come out of the Magic youth programme. Haris died suddenly while training with his NCAA Division 1 Toledo University team in October 2006. He showed all the qualities we need in a Manchester player, both on and off the floor. Haris' parents, Kypros and Polly, and his sister, Elena, always attend the Tournament to see some games and present the trophies.

The Amaechi Basketball Centre would like to thank Manchester City Council for their support in hosting this event.

The 5th Annual Haris Memorial Tournament for Under 18 Boys at the Amaechi Basketball Centre from Monday 27 December to Wednesday 29 December has now finshed. It proved to be an exciting, highly competitive Tournament with the European teams competing well. However, for the first time ever, the Final was contested by English players, representing England Under 18 and Manchester Magic Under 18.

In the Final, England gave a superb performance and proved to be too strong for Manchester on the day. Much credit is due to the Manchester boys for their spirited play throughout the 3 days, and to coaches, Paul Middleton and Garry Latham for bringing out the best from the boys over a 5-game span. The Club has now competed in 3 Finals, but has not yet been able to win the Final game. In 2006, we lost to Granada, Spain and in 2007, we lost to Blair Academy USA. We shall try to change this in 2011.

Particular thanks must go to Freda Jones, Jane and Donald Johnson and Matthew Roberts for doing the brunt of the work in the superb organisation of a terrific Tournament.

Competing Teams were:

Pool A Pool B
Breitengüßbach (Germany) Cheshire
Cyprus National Under 18 England National Under 18
Magic Under 18 Luxembourg National Under 18
Solent Kestrels Magic Under 16

All proceeds from the event go to the Haris Memorial Fund which helps individual young players, who may be in need of funding, to pursue their basketball ambitions.
